The Aim
The aim of the SBCO is to enrich the musical life of the area – by creating opportunities for players of all ages and levels of ability to make music together, and by taking that music to audiences of all sorts throughout the Borders and further afield.

Despite its name, the SBCO is more than an orchestra. Its players practise and perform in a variety of groupings (from small scale ensemble to full scale orchestra) and may also be involved in any of the children's projects, care programmes, and one-off events which the SBCO undertakes each year. The mix of regular practice groups, public performances and special projects offers players a graduated set of opportunities for development, all based around the philosophy of playing together.

This strategy allows less able players to improve their skills and develop their confidence by playing alongside more experienced performers. It also provides access for amateur musicians to the SBCO's small team of professional tutors who offer inspiration and leadership as well as instruction and advice.

The Programme of Events
is developed annually, starting in July and running through till June of the following year.
