ST BOSWELLS CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER APRIL 2008

A Busy Season Gets Even Busier
Well, where do we start?
The 2008 Cricket year began with the club in a very …err "wet" state. A burst pipe over Christmas brought the ceiling down (quite literally) on an unforgettable season for the club. In one of the worst rain affected seasons of all time, the Championship came down to a final day decider between fierce rivals Kelso and St Boswells. Let's recap … 25th August. With both teams deadlocked on 6 wins out of 6, and 7 games required to officially "constitute a league", a rare sunny Saturday brought both relief and excitement to all involved at this winner tales all clash.
Interestingly, the night before, "Bossie" got a frantic phone call from a team trying to fill a spot in their 20/20 tournament that Sunday. Kelso had pulled out as they had a national play off game instead, due to being "Border League Winners". This news may or may not have been the spur … But either way, a fired up St Boswells team produced their best performance of the season to bowl a strong Kelso side our for 89 in reply to a modest but competitive 165 and therefore take the League Title. For captain Rich Young and his team, the rain bashed misery endured over the previous months was instantly wiped from memory and replaced with the one of one the best League finish in recent times.
2008 sees new Captain Scott Turnbull aiming to celebrate his 10th year at the club by winning what would be 4 Border league titles in a row. With a new midweek 20/20 League replacing the "Knock Out Cup" and more emphasis on arranging friendlies to satisfy our growing Sunday player pool (+ up and coming youngsters) the fixture card is bursting with fixtures and 3 cups are up for grabs.
As mentioned, a burst pipe left the club a wreck. However, due to lots of hard work we are well on target to have a spruced up club ready for the first League game on the 26th April. A new practice net, bought with the help of a grant from cricket charity "The Lords Taverners" has ensured our status as being the best equipped in the league, and with draught beer being a huge success last year and the addition of a Pool table and a new TV in the offing, the clubhouse is sure to be an inviting place to spend a few hours this summer.
Our thanks once again go to Gordon Barkham and Craig McNeil who maintain the ground to such a high standard. Further thanks must go to Ian Athey who is continuing as our scorer and Agnes Laing (Honorary Membership Secretary and 100+ Club Secretary). Agnes in particular is keen to hear from anybody who would like to join our 100+ club.
Also – if there are any budding umpires or willing helpers out there, we'd love to hear from you.
Lastly, with the arrival of our rasta friend Thomas, who you may have seen recently in "The Southern Reporter", the club is canvassing support for a January 2010 tour to his St Lucia homeland. Further details will be available during the year in the clubhouse.
